The BAG was founded on 31 May 2000 by C. Aerts with the specific aim to coordinate all the Belgian initiatives and expertise in asteroseismology, in order to orient our research towards the upcoming data of pulsating stars from space.

There are currently four Belgian institutes at which asteroseismologists are active: the Instituut voor Sterrenkunde of the K.U.Leuven (KUL), the Institut d'Astrophysique et Géophysique of the University of Liège (Ulg), the Observational Astronomy Group of the University of Brussels (V.U.B.), and the Royal Observatory of Belgium.

All Belgian Asteroseismologists were brought together into a scientific pole, which was baptised as the Belgian Asteroseismology Group (BAG). The BAG currently consists of 25 scientists from these four institutes. It holds regular meetings and training courses in Belgium.

So far, the BAG has been led by the following presidents:

31/05/2000 - 31/12/2002: Conny Aerts, University of Leuven
01/01/2003 - present: Arlette Noels, University of Liège
